DR. ANGELA WHELAN

Dr. Whelan is one of the wonderful veterinarians at Spencer Creek Animal Hospital and also the owner of the practice. She graduated from Biological Science at the University of Guelph in 1986 and the Ontario Veterinary College in 1990. She began her career in Brantford, working full days and on-call for six years, before transferring to the Hamilton area in 1996.

In 2002, she designed and opened Spencer Creek Animal Hospital, which allowed her to personalize and optimize the care she provides to all her patients. During the intervening years, Dr. Whelan has built a team that stresses the importance of working together to provide compassionate care to all Spencer Creek patients.

In addition to treating dogs and cats, she also see our exotics patients! She continues to grow her career and knowledge base to serve her patients to the best of her ability, and holds certifications in Large and Small Animal Rehabilitation and Acupuncture.

Together with her husband, Jim, she has have five children, Garrett, Justin, Brett, Abi and Marshall, and five grandchildren, Connell, Natalie, Liam, North and Ariat. Dr. Whelan lives on a beautiful horse farm in rural Hamilton, where her family raises Standardbred racehorses, Friesians and Draft riding horses .

In her spare time she enjoys yoga and horseback riding. Keep an eye out for her and her white horse Tundra on the Dundas Valley Trails!

DR. LAURA BOND

Dr. Bond grew up on a hobby farm in Nova Scotia and always knew she wanted to work with animals. She worked at Hope for Wildlife Rehabilitation Center before studying Wildlife Biology at the University of Guelph. She went on to complete her veterinary degree at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and returned to Canada to work in general practice and emergency medicine in the Niagara region.

She is an avid traveler, spending extensive time in South America in search of birds, bugs, snakes and more. She joined the Spencer Creek team in June 2023 after moving to Hamilton with her husband and cat, Cendra. She looks forward to meeting all your pets; she works with cats, dogs and exotics patients. 


DR. AMANDA SANTAROSSA

Dr. Santarossa joined Spencer Creek Animal Hospital in September 2023. She graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in June 201 and started her career in small animal practice. Her clinical interests include preventative medicine, nutrition, surgery and dentistry. She holds her Fear-Free Certification making veterinary visits less stressful for patients. She is also one of our exotics veterinarians!

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, horseback riding, baking, crocheting and reading. She has a cat named Oscar, and two horses, Maxie and Ollie.

DR. DAVID MILLS

Dr. Mills, better known as Dr. Dave around the practice, started at Spencer Creek in July of 2010 to help during vacation time.  His caring manner and gentle attitude quickly endeared him to our patients and he became a permanent and valuable member of our team. Dave is very good with all animals and he is our go-to-guy when it comes to canines who need that special touch, whether they are fearful, stressed, have some aggression or all of the above. 

He graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2000. Alongside his wife Hilary and their daughter Abby, they have a Jack Russel Terrier named Kevin, a Border Collie X named Jack and a German Shepherd named Penny.

He also has a special interest in developing client relationships and provides mobile visits and home consultations for our patients.


 

DR. KRISTYNE SMITH

Dr. Smith started her career as a farm veterinarian, working with cattle, small ruminants and horses. Ultimately, her love of the farm dogs and barn cats pulled her to small animal practice after a couple years.

She has a interest in surgery, as well as helping owners manage their pets’ difficult medical conditions. She is an advocate for mental health within the profession, and loves mentoring young veterinarians/students through the early stages of their careers.

Together with her wife, she is a proud owner of a mixed breed dog, Sidda, two cats, Twix and Tibby and a thoroughbred named Levi. Outside of the hospital she can be found at the barn riding Levi, or cheering Sidda on in all sorts of dog sports!
